Scorpions – One Sting’ll Getcha!

Are scorpions as dangerous as they look?

Who doesn’t love a friendly scorpion in the house, right? Just kidding – but unfortunately, it’s the season for finding them in and around homes all across the Valley. The Arizona Bark Scorpion is the most common type of scorpion in the metro-Phoenix area, and they’re also among the most poisonous. The sting will produce an intense, persistent pain and other physiological symptoms for the average adult. Fortunately, most recover within days. But the venom can prove fatal to children, the elderly, the allergic, and those with certain health issues if medical treatment is not provided immediately. You can read more about them here.

Would you want this guy in your house?

What attracts them?

Scorpions are pretty evenly dispersed over the metro-Phoenix area. They tend to be most active during the nighttime hours, seeking out sources for food and water – like your front porch light, or the light shining through your windows in the evenings. This light draws a slew of insects that scorpions prey on, which brings them running for their next meal. Be sure to minimize the lighting around your house in the evenings to prevent them from targeting your home! And keep in mind, scorpions like water too – so keep an eye out around your pool (including the skimmer), irrigation systems, and your garden and keep excess water to a minimum.

How do I get rid of them??

Once you have a scorpion problem in your home, it can be fairly challenging to eliminate them on your own. Your best bet is to prevent them from invading in the first place by keeping the interior and exterior of your home clean and free of clutter, and by keeping other pests under control as well. The professionals at Absolute Exterminating will put together a treatment plan based on the intensity of the problem you’re facing – including routine internal and external pesticide applications, dust applications, and glue boards.
